We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. Romans 12:6-8 (NIV)
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 (NIV)
Have you ever looked around and thought to yourself, is there more to life than where I am today? I know I have asked myself that question on more than one occasion and in different seasons of life. But how do we go about finding exactly what God is calling us to do?
God has blessed all of us with different talents, different levels of service, and different needs. And if you are like me, not sure of what your abilities are any longer, I encourage you to take a look at the people you’ve built relationships with when God was at the center. He puts people into our lives for a purpose. He gives us opportunities to learn and grow in different areas. All of these interactions and experiences prepare us for when God needs us to make a shift in life. We may feel like it’s a sharp left turn, but we need to rely on God to direct us on the path for which He is calling us to take.
When I think about the Apostles, they all had previous lives before their life-long walk with Christ. They were ordinary men of their time who were unsophisticated and unrefined. They had failures, just like us. They wrestled with sin, just like us. But still, Jesus asked them to follow him. The apostles, and so many others in the Bible, are a direct reflection of how God uses His children in remarkable ways. I am confident they had no idea what they were getting into. They put their faith and trust into this life of service, into spreading the kingdom of God and now generations later, we turn to their stories for guidance.
God is calling you to be a living example of His word. Try not to get too hung up on “what” He is calling you to do. Rather shift your focus to understanding why he put certain people and experiences into your life. It will tell you a great deal about yourself.
So if you feel that it’s time to change careers, or if you have been laid-off or fired due to the pandemic, or if you have a financial need to get back to work, make God the center of your search. He will guide you and direct your next steps. His love will not leave you where you are at today. You just have to be obedient and be of faith to follow Him.
